I think you should watch The Electric State.

I mean, I don't want to. Yuck. But I think you should.

Lol. I watched it. I did so under the mistaken belief that I had read a positive review of it here. And now I’m reading all the dissing of it

It’s funny how that belief had me thinking it was an alright movie. Anyway, it’s light weight and silly but I dare to admit that, I enjoyed it.

This is an interesting point - how online chatter, and reviewers, shift our perception going into a film. It makes me think that maybe the only way to decide for yourself if you like a piece of media is to not engage with anything about it prior to watching - no reviews, no previews, no interviews, no trailers, no billboards, no posters at the cinema - but that feels like an impossibility in 2025.

It's also highly undesirable round here! Trusted opinions are still important. What I find frustrating is social media noise/pile-ons/groupthink. Trying to sort the useful opinions from the "me too" is hard work.

Yeah, this is a really good point - even before you get into the issue of pile-ons in bad faith (ie review bombing a mermaid film because the lead is a person of colour). I only have a couple of reviewers I willingly read. One I pay on SubStack haha (my other fave is Mark Kermode).

It reminded me of a Pixar animated film. Just less clever. And the big budget is revealed in the production quality I think.
