Dynamic range is also the reason everyone complains about the commercials “being louder” than the tv show. I had the pleasure of working in three TV stations where the commercials were set at a level 3 to 4 db lower than the shows they interrupted. The lack of dynamic range in the ads (no quiet bits) made them seem louder.

But it didn’t matter. Whoever I explained it to, immediately dismissed me and insisted they were louder.

It gets worse now that so many people either have just the tiny speakers in their flat screen TVs or cheap soundbars that try and add their own effects. It's all over the place. No wonder so many people have captions turned on these days.
