Iron Giant probably makes it to my top ten animation movies...depends on the day I think. The New England autumn setting is so beautiful and perfect for the story, so many scenes have stuck in my head.
On a related note, Dan, did you catch Mark Hamill on 'Fresh Air' this week talking with such passion about animation voice acting? Turns out he loved it as a kid, so it made sense for it to become his main career (as opposed to just being a fallback as it's so often seen)
I didn't hear that but I know enough people who make some of their living from voice work (narrating audiobooks, voicing ads, etc) that I have much respect for the craft.
Thanks for the recommendation. I look forward to watching that. I didn’t realize a GOOD movie version existed. Incidentally, I used to look forward to the time of the year when I would introduce it to my class of 5-6 year olds. What a powerful story. And I always assumed that the modern Ironman movies were a ripoff version of the original book??? Is that correct?
Nope, Iron Man is a whole different, *very* different, comic book character (TLDR; smart-arse rich guy in a suit) dating back to 1962, several years before Hughes' book came out. I guess Marvel Comics didn't think at the time it was worth having a go at Hughes about breach of copyright, but of course for the movie the title had to be changed.
Extended animation-loving family made it to Reading to see the movie on the big screen, and have watched it at the home of the whānau members with the biggest TV many times since. The 1960s setting and place are beautifully and subtly drawn, characters supported by fine voice acting, and I think we all wiped away a tear before the end.

Wow. I got that completely wrong. I look forward to checking it out this weekend. 😀
